An immersive group game where players meet in a hacker den and use clues to uncover government operations and learn about cybersecurity.

Design Pillars

  • Roleplay to blur the lines between people’s real advocacy, and their experience of the piece. We remained in character at all times. This helped people’s confidence to participate since we only treat them as famous allies in hacking.
  • Pay homage to the feminist lens of the Woman’s Building. We modeled the three main characters off of the Sisters of Survival. They adopted fantastical versions of iconic figures, in their case- nuns, in our case- hackers, to disrupt public spaces.
  • Ensure elders from the Woman’s Building community could play. We simulated symbolic and simplified versions of key components of cybersecurity within our installation, performance, and the digital interface.
  • Provide a persistent experience outside of performance times. We created a set that doubled as an installation. The digital works would run in a different mode during these times.

User Flow

  1. Guests find our colorful lair.
  2. If they engage with us, they are invited to a secret meeting.
  3. At the time of the secret meeting, invitees are checked in with their codename.
  4. The Hackers of Resistane core members kick-off the secret meeting with an update from their sister org.
  5. In the middle of the update, the sister org is raided and arrested.
  6. The secret meeting participants can find clues around the den to find a backdoor into government files, which they then have to work together to navigate, decrypt, and ultimately leak.
  7. The Hackers of Resistance core members act as NPCs, acting out the narrative, improvising hints, and joking about people’s codenames.
  8. Once the files have been successfully leaked, guests are encouraged to disperse from the meeting to avoid being caught.

The experience is a comical, accessible intro to how abundant and important the magical tools of cybersecurity can be.
